Reigning Champions Botafogo Lose to Universidad de Chile in Their Debut
Botafogo, just 123 days after winning their first Copa Libertadores, suffered an unexpected 1-0 defeat in Santiago against Universidad de Chile in their debut match of the 2025 Copa Libertadores group stage, thanks to a goal from Argentine striker Lucas Di Yorio.
The goal in the 59th minute dashed Botafogo’s solid performance in the first half, where they dominated the match without issues and continued to press early in the second half. However, a counterattack led by Matías Sepúlveda and Nicolás Guerra set up Di Yorio, leaving Botafogo’s goalkeeper John with no chance.
Universidad de Chile, despite playing an unattractive game thereafter, defended their lead with tenacity and secured their first three points in Group A, sitting at the top of the table alongside Estudiantes de La Plata, who also have three points after defeating Carabobo 2-0 in Venezuela.
