River Plate fail to win at El Monumental and draw with Barcelona in the Copa Libertadores
River Plate couldn’t get the win this Tuesday in Buenos Aires, drawing 0-0 with Barcelona from Guayaquil at the Monumental Stadium, in a match where the Argentine team constantly pushed for a goal, but the Ecuadorian side stood firm with solid defense. Additionally, Barcelona’s coach, Segundo Castillo, made a striking impression with his bright pink tuxedo.
A missed penalty and the standout performance of Contreras
The match started with a great opportunity for River Plate, who could’ve taken the lead in the 3rd minute. José David Contreras, the goalkeeper for Barcelona, was late closing down and committed a clear penalty on Sebastián Driussi. However, the 29-year-old River Plate forward couldn’t convert, as Contreras redeemed himself by saving the shot and went on to shine as the player of the match.
Despite River Plate’s clear offensive intentions, Barcelona held strong in defense and managed to control the home side’s attacks. The team from Guayaquil closed down spaces and frustrated the Argentine chances, with the Ecuadorian defense standing tall against their opponents.
Upcoming matches in the Copa Libertadores
With this draw, both River Plate and Barcelona remain at the top of Group B in the Copa Libertadores, each with 4 points after two rounds. Independiente del Valle and Universitario de Deportes sit in third and fourth place, with 1 point each.
In the third round, Barcelona will host Universitario on April 22, while on April 23, Independiente del Valle will face River Plate at home.
