The Welcome That Will Cost River Plate a Fanless Match in the Copa Libertadores
During the most recent edition of the Copa Libertadores, one of the most epic welcomes in the tournament’s history took place. River Plate fans lit up El Monumental stadium with flares, fireworks, and chants in an attempt to intimidate their semifinal opponent, Atlético Mineiro, in the second leg of the 2024 tie. The display made such an impact that the sports world quickly took notice of the passionate atmosphere.
The “banderazo” before kickoff captured the fans’ hope of achieving a near-impossible feat: overturning a 0–3 deficit against a solid Brazilian side. And although the final result wasn’t in River’s favor, the historic welcome left a lasting impression on thousands of spectators.
The start of the match was delayed due to thick smoke and intense pyrotechnics that filled every corner of the stadium. With over 85,000 fans in attendance, the miracle comeback didn’t happen, but players and coaches from both sides were left in awe of the electric environment.
“If there’s one thing to recognize and appreciate, it’s the River fans,” said Marcelo Gallardo, head coach of the Argentine side. “The emotion and passion they showed in these difficult days—with the team struggling and a tough result—was incredible. They showed up and supported us the entire match.”
From the Brazilian side, captain Hulk also praised the atmosphere: “It was special. The River fans deserve congratulations; they put on an amazing show. El Monumental is an incredible stadium.”
CONMEBOL’s Sanction on River Plate
However, it wasn’t all celebration. According to CONMEBOL, several security protocols were violated during the match, and incidents of racism were reported, leading to a harsh sanction for the Argentine club.
River Plate must play one match behind closed doors and pay a fine that will be deducted from their 2025 Copa Libertadores earnings. The total amount? $195,000, broken down as follows:
- $100,000 for the use of pyrotechnics and the pre-match welcome,
- $50,000 for racist incidents,
- and $45,000 for other minor infractions.
The punishment also includes one game without their fans in attendance.
