Tragic Details Emerge in Deaths of Young Fans Before Colo-Colo vs. Fortaleza Match
April 10, 2025, Will Be Marked by Tragic Events That Claimed Two Lives Before the Colo-Colo vs. Fortaleza Copa Libertadores Match
The events that unfolded on April 10, 2025, left a lasting impact as two people lost their lives before the highly anticipated match between Colo-Colo and Fortaleza in the Copa Libertadores. Shocking images of the incidents quickly circulated around the globe, and the match was ultimately canceled.
Terrible Details Emerge About the Incidents
Following the confirmation of the deaths of an 18-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy, it was the sister of one of the victims who stepped forward to speak about what happened in Santiago, Chile, on Thursday night.
The sister of the 18-year-old victim confirmed that her sibling had a valid ticket to attend the match and was not trying to sneak in, unlike some fans who jumped fences to enter the stadium. She also stated that it was a police vehicle that caused her sister’s death.
According to reports from the EFE agency, citing local radio station Biobio, Bárbara Pérez, sister of the deceased, stated she was "informed" that her sister "arrived with vital signs," was "crushed," and that she would not share more details because "it was too hard," also noting that she received no further explanation.
“She had her ticket, her ID, everything. They weren’t trying to sneak in, like people are saying,” said her sister.
The young Colo-Colo supporter had gone to Estadio Monumental with two friends when, according to reports, a police vehicle deployed tear gas and ran her over. Her friend Nicolás tried to pull her away to safety, but the vehicle proceeded anyway, said a visibly shaken Bárbara.

Family Seeks Help for Legal Action
“The driver fled. Only one officer had the decency to speak to me. No one from the prosecutor's office has contacted us... Why didn’t the vehicle stop when it saw young people there?” she asked, adding, “We’re working people, we don’t have resources. I need help to sue. This won’t end here. My mom is devastated; they stole my sister’s future.”
“She was quiet, never caused trouble. She’s always been a fan. She went to the stadium to have fun. Now all that’s left is to demand justice. This cannot happen again,” she added.

As evidence, Bárbara keeps her sister’s damaged phone, along with the purchased match ticket and her identification card.
Authorities Begin Investigation
Shortly before these declarations, prosecutor Francisco Morales, quoted by Chilean news outlet Emol, explained that “a stampede occurred, which caused a fence to collapse. It is currently under investigation whether a police vehicle was involved in the fatal outcome.”

“So far, what we know is that a fence crushed the two victims under significant weight, a force that could have originated from various causes. All possibilities are being investigated as potential hypotheses to determine the actual cause of death.”
According to the prosecutor’s version, “based on preliminary reports, these individuals—along with at least a hundred others—were attempting to knock down fences in an effort to gain access to Estadio Monumental. It is in this unclear context that the incident occurred.”
“We are working with all available technical means, including surveillance footage, to determine exactly how the events transpired,” he added.
Regarding the possible criminal responsibility of the police officers involved, Morales explained:
“The person driving the vehicle is currently considered a suspect, although no arrest has been made, as there is no legal cause for detention at this time.”
He added that "all necessary steps are being taken to determine whether the officers had any involvement" in the tragic events.
Match Suspended Amid Chaos
Despite the tragic events, the match began with a full stadium but was suspended in the 72nd minute due to a pitch invasion by fans.
