Who Is Segundo Castillo and Why Has the Coach Gone Viral at the Copa Libertadores?
The Most Viral Coach
That’s the question making the rounds not just in South American football circles — but around the world, too.
Segundo Castillo, the current head coach of Barcelona SC in Ecuador, has become an internet sensation for more than just his tactics on the pitch. The former Ecuadorian international has been investing time — and money — to ensure he always looks the part, donning outfits that wouldn’t be out of place on Carlo Ancelotti at a Champions League match in the Bernabéu. The twist? Castillo brings his own unique flair to every occasion.
Some commentators have even nicknamed him “Second Castle,” a playful translation of his name that also nods to his refined style. His appearance has drawn comparisons to the glory days of colorful Argentine broadcaster Marcelo Araujo, known for his eccentric on-air quips. One can only imagine what social media would’ve looked like if Araujo had introduced Castillo in his pink tuxedo and bowtie ahead of Barcelona SC’s recent Copa Libertadores clash with River Plate.
At the match, Castillo shared a warm embrace with River’s manager Marcelo Gallardo — both impeccably dressed — and later cracked a joke with River striker Miguel Borja that had them both laughing on the sideline.
"Second Castle" the Player
Before stepping into coaching, Castillo enjoyed a successful international career as a midfielder. He began with Doroteas F.C. and rose to prominence at El Nacional, where he won two domestic titles. His club career took him to Europe, Mexico, and the Middle East, with stints at Red Star Belgrade, Everton (Premier League), Pachuca, and Al-Hilal.
He also played in the World Cup with Ecuador and became a national icon during his playing days.
After retiring, Castillo transitioned to coaching and joined Barcelona SC’s staff, first as an assistant to Ariel Holan. In 2024, he took over as head coach, becoming in 2025 the first Ecuadorian to start a season in charge of the club in more than a decade. He’s quickly become known for both his leadership and his one-of-a-kind sideline presence.
