Fluminense snatch a late draw against Unión Española in the Copa Sudamericana
Unión Española were seconds away from grabbing all three points, but in the 94th minute, Fluminense stole a dramatic equalizer to make it 1-1 at the Estadio Municipal de La Florida in Santiago, Chile, in Matchday 3 of Group F of the 2025 Copa Sudamericana.
Chilean control with no reward
In the first half, the Chilean side, led by José Luis ‘Coto’ Sierra, controlled possession but couldn’t break down a well-organized Brazilian defense coached by Renato Gaúcho. Fluminense had a few sporadic chances but didn’t look very threatening going forward.
After the break, Unión Española had several golden opportunities to put the game to bed. In the 52nd minute, Cris Montes missed a sitter after a pinpoint assist from Ariel Uribe, firing wide of Vítor Eudes’ goal. Ten minutes later, the Brazilian keeper came up huge with a one-on-one save against Matías Suárez.
Chile strike first... but Brazil answer late
The breakthrough finally came in the 83rd minute when Pablo Aránguiz took advantage of a defensive lapse to put Unión 1-0 up, sparking wild celebrations on the bench. But just when it looked like the home side had it in the bag, Nonato unleashed a rocket from outside the box that stunned Franco Tognascioli and made it 1-1 in the 94th minute.

With the draw, Unión Española now have two points and sit third in the group, while Fluminense remain top with seven. In the other Group F match, Colombian side Once Caldas edged GV San José 3-2 in Bolivia, leaving the hosts bottom of the table with just one point.
