Lanús Defeats Vasco da Gama and Secures Spot in the Round of 16
In a crucial night for their international ambitions, Lanús claimed a 1-0 home victory over Vasco da Gama at the Ciudad de Lanús stadium, securing their place in the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16. The match, part of the fifth round of Group G, saw the Argentine side dominate and eventually capitalize on their momentum in the second half.
The game’s only goal came in the 53rd minute, when Eduardo Salvio broke away down the flank and delivered a sharp cross into the box. Ramiro Carrera was there to meet it, finishing confidently past goalkeeper Léo Jardim, who had been one of the Brazilian side’s standout performers with multiple key saves.
In the first half, Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad controlled the pace and created several clear chances. However, poor finishing and solid goalkeeping prevented them from breaking the deadlock early.
Once ahead in the second half, Lanús managed the match with poise. Players like Marcelino Moreno and Walter Bou stood out for their movement and ability to create danger, although they couldn't convert additional chances.
Goalkeeper Nahuel Losada also had key moments, especially toward the end, as Vasco da Gama pushed forward in desperation. Coached by Fernando Diniz, the Brazilian team is going through a difficult period, now winless in nine matches across all competitions, including five losses and four draws.
Vasco on the brink of elimination
With this defeat, Vasco da Gama finds itself in a tough position: bottom of Group G and sitting in the relegation zone of the Brasileirão. They will need a win against Melgar at home on Tuesday, May 27, to keep their hopes of international competition alive.

Meanwhile, Lanús, who was recently eliminated from the Argentine Apertura Tournament by Boca Juniors in a penalty shootout, will face Puerto Cabello on the same day. But this time, they'll do so with the relief of having already clinched qualification to the next round of the Sudamericana, providing a positive end to the first half of their season.
