Santos 2-1 Macará in Copa Sudamericana

Santos had to suffer, but they secured an important 2-1 victory over Macará at Vila Belmiro in the first leg of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana Round of 16. The Ecuadorian side struck early and resisted for much of the match, but eventually fell to the Peixe’s pressure and, above all, a brilliant performance from Neymar.

The Brazilian was the driving force behind the attack, constantly involved in the buildup and ultimately decisive in the comeback with two assists.

Macará, however, showed from the opening minutes that they had not traveled to Brazil simply to defend.

Franco Posse Silences Vila Belmiro

Only two minutes had passed when Neymar had the first opportunity from a free kick, but Rodrigo Rodríguez responded to deny the Brazilian star.

Two minutes later came the Ecuadorian blow.

Mateo Viera delivered the cross and Franco Posse appeared inside the box to redirect the ball with his knee and make it 1-0.

It was a huge goal considering the stage and the moment.

The Uruguayan continued his excellent season, scoring his third goal in the Sudamericana and his 16th in 34 matches.

From that point on, Santos took complete control.

Neymar began urging the crowd to turn up the pressure as he tried to find spaces against a Macará defense that entered the match having conceded only three goals in the tournament.

There were also moments of concern. First, the Brazilian felt discomfort in his ankle and had to change his boots. Later, he appeared to hurt his knee after getting caught in the turf.

But he kept playing.

And he ended up making the difference.

Neymar and Gabigol Find the Equalizer

The Peixe increased the pressure in the closing minutes of the first half.

In the 39th minute, José Cazares produced a spectacular sliding challenge to prevent Gabriel Barbosa from getting his shot away. Three minutes later, Neymar played a perfect ball through to Gabigol, but Rodríguez once again came to Macará’s rescue.

The resistance finally ended in the 44th minute.

Neymar played a brilliant first-time pass to put Gabigol in the perfect position. The striker finished past the goalkeeper to make it 1-1 and send Vila Belmiro into celebration.

The equalizer came just before halftime and completely changed the complexion of the match.

Gabigol Has Two Goals Ruled Out

Santos returned from the locker room determined to complete the comeback.

In the 48th minute, they appeared to have done it. Neymar produced a brilliant dummy and Gabigol found the back of the net again to seemingly complete his brace.

But he was offside.

Goal disallowed.

The story repeated itself in the 55th minute. Neymar once again found Barbosa, and the striker produced a superb finish with the outside of his left foot.

It appeared to be a historic moment: Gabigol’s 100th goal for the Peixe.

Once again, however, the offside flag went up.

Another goal disallowed.

Macará continued to hold on, with Rodrigo Rodríguez emerging as one of the standout performers of the match. In the 62nd minute, he came to the rescue again after Barrial went extremely close to scoring Santos’ second.

William Arão Completes the Comeback

Santos kept pushing until they finally got their reward in the 75th minute.

Neymar delivered a corner toward the near post and William Arão appeared to send the ball into the net.

Macará protested that the ball had not completely crossed the line, but the goal was awarded.

2-1.

It was Arão’s first goal for Santos and also his first of the season.

He could hardly have chosen a better moment.

For Neymar, it also meant a second assist on the night.

Macará were forced to abandon part of their defensive approach in search of an equalizer, opening spaces for a Santos side that remained dangerous every time the ball reached the feet of their No. 10.

Deep into stoppage time, in the 90+7 minute, Neymar came extremely close to putting the finishing touch on his performance with a spectacular free kick, but Rodríguez once again denied him.

Neymar’s Magic Is Still Alive

There was no time for anything else.

Santos defeated Macará 2-1 and will travel to Ecuador with an advantage ahead of the second leg of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana Round of 16.

Macará lost, but they survived Vila Belmiro. Posse’s goal and the narrow deficit leave the tie completely open ahead of the decisive match in Ambato.

For Santos, the biggest story was once again Neymar.

Involved, fearless and decisive when his team needed him most, he finished the night with two assists while carrying much of the Peixe’s creative responsibility.

With his recent numbers, the Brazilian has now recorded 13 goals and eight assists in his last 24 matches for Santos.

The years have passed. The injuries and doubts have come along the way.

But at Vila Belmiro, one thing became clear once again.

Neymar’s magic is still alive.
