Cienciano Stuns Defending Champions Lanus with Epic Comeback in the 2026 Copa Sudamericana

Against all odds, the Peruvian side completed a remarkable comeback at home to knock out the reigning Copa Sudamericana champions. Here are all the details.

Cienciano pulled off the unthinkable, eliminating the defending champions to book a place in the Round of 16, where they will face Brazil's Botafogo.

Needing to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit, the Peruvian side produced a stunning comeback on Wednesday, defeating Lanús, the reigning 2026 CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana champions, to end the Argentine club's title defense.

A dominant 4-0 victory at Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega in Cusco was enough to secure a 4-2 aggregate triumph. Lanús struggled to create chances throughout the match, with the altitude and Cienciano's relentless pressure proving too much to overcome.

The stars of the night were Ecuadorian striker Carlos Garcés and Peruvian-Uruguayan forward Alejandro Hohberg, who each scored a brace to complete one of the tournament's most memorable comebacks.

From the opening whistle, Cienciano played with relentless intensity, feeding off the energy of its passionate home crowd and making the most of Cusco's 3,400-meter altitude. Pressing high, attacking with pace, and constantly stretching the field, the Peruvian side completely overwhelmed the defending champions, who never found a way back into the match.

A HISTORIC COMEBACK

The star of the night was Ecuadorian striker Carlos Garcés, who opened the scoring in the 7th minute by finishing off a cross from Cristian Souza.

Just before halftime, Alejandro Hohberg leveled the aggregate score with a powerful long-range strike in the 40th minute.

While Lanús was still trying to regroup, Garcés struck again, heading home in stoppage time of the first half (45+1') to put Cienciano ahead on aggregate.

Deep into stoppage time (90+5'), a lightning-fast counterattack ended with Garcés providing the assist for Hohberg, who completed the 4-0 victory and sparked wild celebrations throughout the stadium.

The attacking duo stole the show with two goals each, while Cristian Souza also delivered an outstanding performance by playing a key role in several of the goals.

THE NEXT CHALLENGE

Lanús pushed forward after the break in search of the goal that would have forced a penalty shootout, but Cienciano remained composed, organized, and in control of possession.

The Argentine side created very few clear opportunities, and whenever they threatened, goalkeeper Ítalo Espinoza responded with confidence.

With the emphatic victory, Cienciano eliminated the reigning Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana champions, producing one of the biggest upsets of this year's tournament.

The Peruvian club will now face Botafogo in the Round of 16, with the first leg in Cusco and the return match in Rio de Janeiro. After a historic comeback, El Papá de América will look to continue writing another memorable chapter in South American football.
