Guaraní Win Isn’t Enough as Universidad de Chile Reach Sudamericana Round of 16
Guaraní claimed a 2-1 win in the second leg against Universidad de Chile, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the heavy defeat from the first match. With a 6-2 aggregate score, the Chilean club secured their place in the 2025 Copa Sudamericana Round of 16, completing the job with a composed performance in Asunción.
The Paraguayan side came out bravely at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco, pushing for a miracle comeback. Although they looked more threatening than in the first leg, the early goal from Lucas Assadi in the 17th minute effectively ended any hopes. At that point, Guaraní would have needed six unanswered goals to pull off the impossible.
Late in the game, Richard Torales scored twice in quick succession (84’ and 89’) to give the home fans something to cheer about and add respectability to the scoreline. Still, the damage from the 5-0 loss in Santiago proved insurmountable, and Guaraní bowed out of the competition despite the home victory.
La U handled the pressure well, staying compact and focused under the guidance of coach Gustavo Álvarez. Their defensive solidity and tactical discipline helped neutralize Guaraní’s late push. Now, Universidad de Chile move on to face Independiente de Avellaneda in the Round of 16—a heavyweight clash that promises high intensity and drama in the knockout stage.
