Rüdiger Apologizes After Losing His Cool in Copa del Rey Final Between Barcelona and Real Madrid
Antonio Rüdiger issued a public apology following his controversial behavior at the end of the 2025 Copa del Rey final between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. The German defender was at the center of a heated incident after the conclusion of extra time, sparking major controversy.
The Incident During the Final
In the closing moments of extra time, after a foul was called by referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, Rüdiger, who had already been substituted, threw an object from the technical area toward the referee. Although it did not strike him, the act was deemed aggressive and inappropriate.
The situation escalated, leading to Rüdiger’s expulsion, and he had to be physically restrained by several members of Real Madrid’s coaching staff. The incident unfolded just before the final whistle confirmed Barcelona’s 3-2 victory.
Rüdiger's Public Apology
After the match, Rüdiger took to social media to express remorse for his actions. In a heartfelt tweet, he stated:
"There is no excuse for my behavior last night. I am very sorry for it. We played a very good game from the second half onwards. After 111 minutes, I could no longer help my team and, before the final whistle, I made a mistake. Sorry again to the referee and to everyone I disappointed last night."
Possible Sanctions Loom
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is reportedly considering a suspension for Rüdiger, which could range from 4 to 12 matches, potentially ruling him out for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
This latest controversy adds fuel to the growing tension surrounding officiating, especially given Real Madrid’s prior criticism of the appointment of De Burgos Bengoetxea for the final, accusing the selection of being biased.
