Why Isn't Mbappé Playing for Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey Against Leganés?
Real Madrid face a crucial stretch of the season, though their Copa del Rey clash against Leganés is the least significant on a schedule that includes high-stakes matches against Atlético Madrid and Manchester City this month.
No Mbappé or Bellingham for Copa del Rey
Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that Mbappé has a calf contusion, ruling him out of the trip to Leganés. The French star is being rested for the Madrid Derby after sustaining a knock in last Saturday’s LaLiga match.
Meanwhile, Bellingham is also left out of the squad. The English midfielder, like Mbappé, is being carefully managed ahead of Real Madrid’s upcoming decisive fixtures. He hasn’t trained with the squad at all this week.
Ancelotti to Field a Fresh Lineup
With two of the team’s biggest stars unavailable, Ancelotti is set to field an experimental starting XI. Arda Güler and Endrick—two of the squad’s least-used players this season—are expected to start and take advantage of their Copa del Rey opportunity. Both played key roles in the round of 16 victory against Celta Vigo.
Vinícius Jr. Included but Likely to Be Benched
Vinícius Jr. has been called up for the match, but his minutes will likely be limited, making it probable that he starts on the bench. Madrid’s priority remains LaLiga and the Champions League, ensuring they don’t jeopardize their two most important title pursuits for a domestic cup fixture.
