Is Guardiola's Cycle at Manchester City Over? A Trophyless Season Sparks Doubt
For the first time since arriving in English football, Pep Guardiola has endured a completely trophyless campaign with Manchester City. The 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup Final sealed a season filled with more questions than answers, and now the speculation begins: Has Guardiola’s era at the Etihad reached its end?
A Season Without Glory
What seemed unthinkable just a year ago—when City completed a historic treble—has now become reality: zero trophies in 2024/25.
- FA Cup : Beaten 1-0 by Crystal Palace at Wembley
- Champions League : Knocked out in the playoff round by Real Madrid
- Premier League : Finished third, behind Liverpool and Arsenal
- Carabao Cup : Eliminated in Round 4 by Tottenham Hotspur
Not since his debut season in 2016/17 had Guardiola finished a year without silverware.
The Stat That Signals Decline
Before this season, Guardiola had won at least one title in 15 of his 16 campaigns as a manager—across Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City. In 8 of his previous 9 years in England, the City boss lifted at least one major trophy. That streak is now broken.
Still, signs of an imminent departure are slim. In November 2024, Guardiola signed a contract extension through June 2027, suggesting he still believes in the potential for a new cycle in Manchester.

What’s Left to Fight For?
Despite the disappointing season, Champions League qualification is still at stake. City currently sit sixth in the Premier League with 65 points, just one behind fifth-place Aston Villa, who have already played their matchday.
Upcoming fixtures:
- Tuesday vs Bournemouth
- Sunday vs Fulham
A demanding end to a frustrating campaign, and while Guardiola’s continuity is contractually secure, his aura of invincibility may no longer be.
The end of an era? Not officially. But the beginning of a new one? That remains to be seen.
