Reports: Lionel Messi Looking to Leave Inter Miami, Could Barcelona or Newell’s Be His Next Stop?
After Inter Miami’s tough 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16, Lionel Messi is reportedly considering a move away from MLS to finish the six months before the 2026 World Cup in a more competitive league. The report comes from ESPN Argentina’s Esteban Edul, who claims to have spoken with people close to the player.
According to Edul, Messi was leaning toward renewing with the U.S. club, but talks have now stalled. That’s sparked speculation about his next step, especially as the Argentine captain looks to stay sharp for what could be his final World Cup. Among the potential destinations being discussed are Newell’s Old Boys, for emotional reasons, and FC Barcelona, where he built his legendary career.
Is an exit on the horizon?
That heavy defeat to PSG was a major blow to Javier Mascherano’s side, despite a solid group stage showing against Porto, Al Ahly, and Palmeiras. Even though the result was disappointing, the tournament marked historic progress for Inter Miami, driven by Messi’s leadership and the support of over 65,000 fans at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Messi’s current deal with Inter Miami runs through December, but starting July 1 he’ll be free to negotiate with other clubs. While some outlets in Italy and England have floated rumors of offers, nothing official has been made public. Any move wouldn’t happen right away but could be a calculated step in preparing for the World Cup.
Since joining MLS in 2024, Lionel Messi has played 63 matches, scoring 50 goals and delivering 23 assists. He’s also helped win the Leagues Cup and the Supporters’ Shield. Still, his competitive fire might push him toward one last challenge—something that keeps him at the top of his game ahead of Argentina’s title defense in 2026.
