Real Madrid Could Save Millions Thanks To Fran García’s Rise Under Xabi Alonso
The Spanish left-back is thriving under Xabi Alonso’s leadership and could influence the club’s transfer plans this summer.
Fran García Finds His Form With Xabi Alonso’s System
The arrival of Xabi Alonso has brought new life to Fran García. The left-back, who struggled to show consistency during two seasons with Carlo Ancelotti, has seized his opportunity during the Club World Cup. The transition to a back five with three center-backs and two wing-backs has suited his style perfectly.
In the absence of the injured Ferland Mendy, García has started all four matches, playing the full 90 minutes each time. He provided an assist against Salzburg and showed strong chemistry with Vinícius Jr. on the left flank. His physical ability to cover the entire wing and his improved understanding of the team’s build-up have stood out.
Against Juventus, he completed nearly every pass, won 8 out of 12 duels, and was only dribbled past once. After the match, he acknowledged the tactical shift had played to his strengths: “The coach wants us to press high and win the ball early. That gives us chances to create, and that’s great for our forwards. Trent and I need to push high and connect the lines.”
Álvaro Carreras Transfer Now In Question
Meanwhile, Real Madrid had been working to secure the signing of Álvaro Carreras from Benfica for the 2025–26 season. The Portuguese club is demanding the full €50 million release clause, which has slowed down negotiations.
However, Fran García’s impressive performances may change the equation. If he continues to perform at this level, the club might reconsider spending heavily on a new left-back. That would not only save money but also reward a player already integrated into the squad.
Xabi Alonso has emphasized the importance of bold wing-back play: “We want our wing-backs to be brave and push forward,” he said after the quarterfinal qualification in Miami.
With his solid performances and tactical fit, Fran García could become one of the key assets in Real Madrid’s revamped lineup—while also helping the club avoid a big summer expenditure.
