What Sergio Ramos Said After Monterrey’s Painful Exit From the Club World Cup
The Spanish defender stepped up after the elimination and made it clear this team won’t give up. Heads held high… and eyes on what’s next.
Sergio Ramos, one of Monterrey’s key figures during the Club World Cup, broke his silence after the team’s elimination in the Round of 16 against Borussia Dortmund. Without offering excuses, the Spanish defender acknowledged the squad’s disappointment but also highlighted their pride in how they performed on the pitch.
"We leave with a clear conscience for having played well. Sometimes in football, things don’t go your way. It’s a shame to bow out of a Club World Cup, but we’re proud," said the World Cup winner.
A team with heart
Rayados fell 2-1 to the German side. Dortmund took a two-goal lead thanks to Serhou Guirassy, but Monterrey responded with a strike from Germán Berterame and even put the European giants under pressure for stretches. Despite the fightback, it wasn’t enough to turn the game around.
"We had to say goodbye to this tournament, but it will help us grow in the future as a team. We’re leaving with our heads held high," Ramos reiterated. Since arriving at the club earlier this year, he has quickly become a leader both on and off the field.
Mexico, a league on the rise
The veteran also took a moment to reflect on his experience in Mexican football. "Mexican football is growing. There’s talent, and as I’ve said before, it’s very comparable to the top leagues, although it’s still in development," he said.
A new chapter with Domenec Torrent
The World Cup also marked Domenec Torrent’s debut as Rayados’ head coach. Now, the focus shifts to the Apertura 2025, which kicks off on July 11. Monterrey will open the tournament with a visit to Pachuca, in a clash between the two Mexican teams that participated in the Club World Cup… but couldn’t progress.
