Cuti Romero Reveals the Sacrifice He Made to Play in the Final

Argentina's defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final left a painful mark on the Albiceleste. The South American side came within touching distance of winning a second consecutive world title but suffered a 1-0 defeat in extra time following a goal from Ferran Torres.

Months after that heartbreaking final, Cristian Romero revealed the physical condition in which he played the biggest match of the tournament.

During an interview with Los Edul, the Atlético de Madrid defender admitted that he was barely able to train after the semifinal against England because of an Achilles tendon injury.

"After England, I had an Achilles tendon problem that I'm still dealing with today. I couldn't train on almost any of the days leading up to the final," he admitted.

The Argentine defender explained that he decided to play despite the pain, but his body eventually reached its limit.

"I played after taking a couple of pills and receiving an injection, but my body couldn't handle the second half," he revealed.

Argentina Reached the Final With Several Injured Players

However, Romero was not the only player who competed in the World Cup while struggling with physical problems.

The defender revealed that Leandro Paredes suffered a cracked rib, while Lisandro Martínez, Nahuel Molina, and Nicolás Tagliafico were also dealing with different injuries.

Even Emiliano Martínez, one of Argentina's most important players, competed with a broken finger.

According to the new Argentine captain, the physical demands of the tournament took a significant toll on several members of the squad managed by Lionel Scaloni.

Nevertheless, he made it clear that those problems did not diminish the champions' achievement.

The defender also addressed the theories that circulated on social media following Argentina's defeat.

Romero dismissed suggestions that anything unusual had happened during the final, insisting that the result was decided by what took place on the pitch.

"Spain played a great match and deserved to become world champions," he acknowledged.

The Argentine defender also recalled that Argentina had one fewer day of rest and had to play in extremely high temperatures, although he insisted that he was not looking for excuses.

For Romero, what matters most is that every member of the squad gave everything they had in their attempt to lift the World Cup trophy once again.

Argentina may have lost the title, but Romero insisted that he could walk away knowing he had given absolutely everything, even when his body could no longer respond.
