Messi and Mbappé, Two Stories That Keep Intersecting at the Top of World Football
Messi and Mbappé shone with extraordinary numbers in the 2025/26 season, although their paths were very different.
Messi and Mbappé, two different paths
Lionel Messi, at 39 years old, once again proved that age is not a limit when it comes to talent and relevance. With Inter Miami, he led the team to its first MLS title, being a key player despite the rotations and rests imposed by the management of physical loads. In the 2026 World Cup, the Argentine captain led the Albiceleste to their second consecutive final, after winning the previous World Cup as a key player, reaffirming his decisive role both in the club and the national team. Although his continuation with the sky-blue and white jersey remains an enigma, Messi is already preparing his return to Miami with an eye on the two-time championship.
While Mbappé established himself in another way despite not reaching the 8th match, the Frenchman was able to claim the Golden Boot after scoring the most goals in the World Cup.
Mbappé's goals without titles
Kylian Mbappé experienced a season marked by individual effectiveness but without collective crowns. With Real Madrid, he didn't win any titles, and France finished in fourth place in the World Cup. However, the French forward was the top scorer in LaLiga, the Champions League, and the 2026 World Cup itself, where he also became the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, surpassing Messi. Now he begins the preseason under the orders of José Mourinho with the ambition of returning the white team to the path of titles.
The statistical comparison
The numbers of both reflect the magnitude of their impact on world football. Messi played 49 matches, scored 45 goals, and provided 30 assists with an average of 8.55 points per game. Mbappé, in 60 matches, scored 58 goals and provided 13 assists with an average of 7.75. In goals without penalties, the difference narrows to 41 for Messi and 43 for Mbappé. In successful dribbles, the Frenchman leads with 136 compared to the Argentine's 117. Two styles, two different competitive contexts, but one conclusion, the 2025/26 season once again placed them at the center of the stage as symbols of talent and relevance in global football.
