A Revolt in the Spanish National Team? The Dani Olmo Case and Barça Players' Protest
The "Dani Olmo case" not only put FC Barcelona in a precarious position but also nearly sparked an unprecedented conflict within the Spanish national team. According to journalist Joaquín Maroto on Esport3's "Onze" program, several Barça players were prepared to boycott Luis de la Fuente's March call-up as a form of protest over the delayed registration of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor, blocked by LaLiga and the RFEF.
Barça Players Consider Boycott
Prominent Barça players, including Gavi, Pedri, Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, Ferran Torres, Marc Casadó, Fermín López, and Alejandro Balde, reportedly contemplated skipping the upcoming national team camp. While Spain's Sports Law mandates attendance for national team call-ups, the players allegedly planned to cite "minor injuries" to avoid potential sanctions.
The proposed boycott was intended as a show of solidarity with Dani Olmo, who was left out of competition due to administrative issues stemming from Barcelona's financial struggles. The matter was ultimately resolved when the Spanish High Council for Sports (CSD) issued an emergency injunction allowing the provisional registration of Olmo and Pau Víctor, averting a potential clash with the national team.
Dani Olmo's Key Role in Spain's Success
The situation gained greater attention due to Dani Olmo's pivotal role in Spain's triumph at EURO 2024. With 3 goals and 2 assists, including decisive performances in the semifinals against France, Olmo was instrumental in securing the title. A potential boycott by Barça players could have disrupted the unity of the La Roja squad during one of its most successful periods.
"Everyone was ready to stand up for Dani Olmo and skip the national team call-up," said Maroto, emphasizing the potential tension such a protest could have created in the camp.
A Temporary Resolution
The CSD intervened just in time, granting the necessary approval for Olmo and Pau Víctor's registration shortly before Barcelona's Supercopa de España semifinal against Athletic Club. However, the legal dispute is not entirely over, as the Administrative Court of Sport (TAD) will make the final ruling on the matter.
