Ancelotti Demands a 'Clean' La Liga and Defends Competition Integrity
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti reaffirmed his belief in the integrity of La Liga despite recent officiating controversies. Ahead of the upcoming clash against Girona, the Italian coach emphasized the importance of maintaining a “clean competition” and addressed ongoing debates surrounding refereeing decisions.
Ancelotti Stands by His Comments on Officiating
During a pre-match press conference, Ancelotti was asked about his previous remarks from January 26, 2024, when he responded to FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta’s claims that the league was “rigged” following the controversial Real Madrid vs. Almería match.
“I maintain my opinion—I want a competition as clean as possible,” Ancelotti stated.
He also referenced the Negreira case, highlighting that the issue isn’t about a rigged league but rather the broader corruption scandals being investigated by Spain’s Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and the Civil Guard.
“Everyone knows what has happened over the last twenty years in Spanish football. That’s where the problem lies—not in an adulterated league,” he added.
Bellingham’s Controversial Red Card
The Real Madrid camp has been vocal about the controversial red card shown to Jude Bellingham in the 1-1 draw against Osasuna at El Sadar. Bellingham was suspended for two matches for alleged “disrespectful behavior” towards referee José Luis Munuera Montero.
Ancelotti addressed the situation, expressing disappointment while confirming the club’s appeal:
“We have to respect the decision. The club is appealing to try and reduce the two-match suspension,” Ancelotti said.
Despite Bellingham’s absence against Girona, Ancelotti remains optimistic:
“We’ve managed good results without Bellingham before. Hopefully, we can do it again tomorrow.”
Squad Rotation and Injury Updates
With a packed fixture schedule, Ancelotti hinted at potential rotations against Girona. Midfielder Fede Valverde could be rested:
“It’s possible he’ll rest. He’s been playing well, but if he needs a break, he won’t have an issue sitting on the bench.”
Regarding injuries, Ancelotti provided clarity on Dani Ceballos, who was seen with a bandaged left ankle during training:
“Ceballos is fine. We’ll evaluate who might need rest because fresh legs will help us tomorrow.”
He also confirmed the recovery of defender David Alaba, who could return to the lineup after a lengthy absence.
The Rise of Raúl Asencio
Ancelotti took a moment to praise young center-back Raúl Asencio, who has solidified his place in the starting XI:
“He hasn’t changed his attitude—he speaks little and focuses on his work. His mental strength and concentration have allowed him to perform well against top opponents.”
Asencio’s emergence has been a bright spot for Real Madrid’s defense amid injury struggles.
