Andrea Berta’s Legacy at Atlético de Madrid
Atlético de Madrid and Andrea Berta, who served as the club’s sporting director, announced on Sunday that they have reached an “agreement for the termination of his contract.” Berta, who joined the club in 2013 and assumed the sporting director role in 2017, stated, “Time passes for everyone, and it has been understood that this is the moment to write separate chapters.”
A Decade of Success and Growth
“This decision brings to a close more than a decade of work characterized by strong sporting results and the club’s growth. We want to thank Andrea for his effort, commitment, and dedication over these 11 years, and we wish him the best in his new professional chapter,” the club stated in its official announcement.
Berta also shared a farewell message through EFE, expressing gratitude to the fans and the club for their unwavering support: “Effort, commitment, and dedication to our colors have been the essence of everything we’ve done. With the utmost respect, I ask our fans to consider me one of their own.”
Sporting Achievements Under His Leadership
During his tenure as sporting director, Atlético de Madrid won several major titles:
- One Copa del Rey (2013)
- Two La Liga titles (2013-14 and 2020-21)
- One Supercopa de España (2014)
- One Europa League (2017-18)
- One UEFA Super Cup (2018)
Berta was instrumental in key signings that defined the club’s last decade. Notable players include Antoine Griezmann, who returned after a stint with Barcelona, and Luis Suárez, a decisive figure in the 2020-21 La Liga victory. Other standout acquisitions include Kieran Trippier, Marcos Llorente, Rodrigo de Paul, and more recently, Julián Álvarez.
Restructuring and Transition
Berta’s departure comes a year after a restructuring of the club’s organizational chart led by Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, which created new general management positions. Carlos Bucero took over as General Director of Football, while Óscar Mayo assumed responsibility for Revenue and Operations.
With 52 signings since 2017 and an estimated expenditure of €828 million, Andrea Berta leaves a significant legacy at Atlético de Madrid. His departure marks the end of an era but also signals a new chapter for the club as it continues to establish itself as one of Europe’s top football powerhouses.
