Another Star Renewal at Barcelona: Gavi Signs Until 2030
After Pedri's renewal, Barcelona announced on Friday the extension of Gavi's contract, with the midfielder also signing until 2030.
Midfielder Pablo Páez Gavira 'Gavi', whose contract was set to expire on June 30, 2026, has renewed his commitment to Barcelona until June 30, 2030, the club confirmed on Friday.
The Spanish international signed the contract at the Spotify Camp Nou offices, accompanied by his agent, Iván de la Peña, and his family. The event was also attended by FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta, vice president of sports, Rafa Yuste, and director of football, Anderson Luis de Souza 'Deco'.
Gavi's renewal is the fourth in recent days for Barcelona, following the contract extensions of center-back Ronald Araujo until June 2031, right-back Gerard Martín until June 2028, and midfielder Pedro González 'Pedri' until June 2030.
A product of La Masia, Gavi (from Los Palacios y Villafranca, Seville) joined the academy at the age of 11 from Betis. He is considered one of the most promising players in the squad and an important figure in the team's present after recovering from the first serious injury of his emerging career.
The 20-year-old midfielder suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, along with an associated meniscus injury, on November 19, 2023, during the Spain vs. Georgia match at the José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid. This injury kept him sidelined for over eleven months.
Gavi made his comeback on October 20 against Sevilla, and since then, he has played 20 matches under Flick, nine of which were as a starter, contributing two goals and three assists. In total, the Andalusian has played 131 games for Barcelona, scoring nine goals and providing 15 assists.
Gavi debuted at 17 years and 24 days in the first team under Ronald Koeman on August 29, 2021. After Koeman's dismissal in October 2021, he became a key starter in midfield under Xavi Hernández.
He played a leading role in winning La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup in the 2022-2023 season, and also in the latest Spanish Super Cup victory, scoring one goal and providing two assists in two matches. This performance has clearly impressed Flick.
The German coach has repeatedly praised Gavi’s intensity and his ball skills.
According to BeSoccer Pro data for EFE, Flick is the coach with whom Gavi has achieved the best career statistics in completed passes (89.8%), assists (0.22), recoveries (8.26), recoveries in the opponent’s half (3.6), goals (0.2), and fewer fouls per match (2).
Gavi is the second player to have played the most matches for Barça at 20 years or younger (131), ahead of Pedri (114), and only surpassed by Bojan Krkic (163), although Gavi has until August 5 to break this record.
