Atlético President Blasts Courtois: “Courtois just needs to keep quiet”
Enrique Cerezo, president of Atlético de Madrid, lashed out this Sunday at Thibaut Courtois, current goalkeeper of Real Madrid, following his recent comments accusing the Colchoneros of playing the victim after their Champions League clash.
“Courtois is a special case. What he needs to do is thank Atlético de Madrid for the four years he spent here and the titles he won… And keep quiet,” Cerezo told the media.
Courtois’ plaque will not be removed from the Walk of Legends
Despite the controversy, the club has no plans to remove the Belgian keeper’s plaque from the Walk of Legends, an honor he retains from his time at the club between 2011 and 2014, during which he won four titles.
“We are gentlemen, sportsmen, and professionals, and we don’t need to go against our principles. Courtois just needs to keep quiet and stay calm,” Cerezo insisted. The Atlético president also acknowledged the goalkeeper’s talent but reminded him of his past at the club: “He is a great goalkeeper; everyone recognizes that, including us. And what he needs to do is continue being what he was when he was at Atlético de Madrid: a gentleman and a professional.”
