Atlético Stumbles Again, Shares Points with Villarreal
The home side, starting from behind, pushed for a comeback until the very last minute but couldn’t complete the turnaround.
In a match filled with intensity at the Metropolitano Stadium, Villarreal managed to secure a valuable point after a 1-1 draw against Atlético de Madrid.
Rotations and Controversial Penalty
With a packed schedule and eyes set on Wednesday’s Champions League match against Salzburg, Diego Simeone opted to rest some key players, including Antoine Griezmann, Rodrigo De Paul, and José María Giménez, who began on the bench. On the other side, Villarreal, coached by Marcelino, faced the absence of Dani Parejo, leading to Brazilian goalkeeper Luiz Junior taking the spot between the posts, while Kambwala replaced Juan Foyth in defense.
The game started with Atlético pressing high and dominating possession. However, a mistake by Witsel after a cross from Álex Baena left Reinildo in a tough spot, causing him to foul Gerard Moreno in the box. The Villarreal forward converted the penalty in the 29th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Simeone Chases the Comeback
The goal ignited Villarreal, who came close to extending their lead with chances from Gerard Moreno following a mistake by Koke near the home team’s box. In response, Simeone made key substitutions in the second half, bringing in Rodrigo De Paul, Samuel Lino, and César Azpilicueta to add depth.
The changes paid off quickly. In the 58th minute, Samuel Lino took advantage of a cross from Nahuel Molina that, after a clever backheel by Ángel Correa, landed perfectly for the Brazilian to equalize 1-1.
A Nail-Biting Finish
Both teams pushed for the win. Villarreal relied on aerial plays with substitutions like Ayoze Pérez, Denis Suárez, and Pepé, while Atlético brought on Griezmann in search of a game-winner. In the closing moments, the hosts came close to completing the comeback, but Luiz Junior made a spectacular save from a Pablo Barrios shot.
The draw leaves Atlético de Madrid with a bittersweet feeling as they aimed to continue their momentum after defeating Bayer Leverkusen, while Villarreal celebrates a hard-earned point in a challenging venue.
