Barcelona has activated the contract extension option for their Basque defender Iñigo Martínez, who will remain with the club until June 30, 2026.

The club announced this on Thursday in a statement, specifying that "the agreement between both parties had been closed for months, but it was pending registration with the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (LFP)." With this renewal, Barcelona ensures the continuity of a key player in the tactical plans of German manager Hansi Flick.

Iñigo Martínez's key role

Iñigo Martínez, who joined for free from Athletic Club in the 2023-24 season, had a somewhat inconsistent first campaign due to injuries. He only played 25 matches, 15 of them as a starter, under the management of Xavi Hernández.

Since the arrival of Flick, Martínez has regained his best form. At 33 years old, he has become a regular starter in a team that remains alive in all competitions. His connection with Pau Cubarsí, his tactical intelligence in the offside line, and his influence over younger players have made him a fundamental pillar for the manager from Heidelberg.
