Barcelona vs. Real Madrid Clásico May Be Played Outside Spain if Spotify Camp Nou Isn't Ready
The FC Barcelona board is reportedly exploring the possibility of hosting the second-round El Clásico match of LaLiga in a major European stadium. This contingency arises due to potential delays in the renovation of the Spotify Camp Nou, as revealed by ‘Qué t’hi jugues’ on SER Catalunya.
Although unconventional, Barça has not ruled out moving the iconic Spanish football duel outside Spain if their home stadium is not ready in time.
Why Montjuïc Isn’t an Option
Barcelona extended its lease on the Lluís Companys Stadium in Montjuïc until the end of April 2025. However, extending it further is unfeasible due to scheduled concerts in May, including the Rolling Stones' world tour kick-off, which would incur hefty penalties if canceled.
Clásico Revenue & Global Appeal
El Clásico, one of the most-watched football games globally, generates significant revenue, estimated between 8 and 9 million dolars. Barça is keen to ensure that the match occurs in a stadium capable of hosting 60,000 spectators with world-class facilities.
Pending Approval from LaLiga & RFEF
While FC Barcelona remains optimistic about completing the Spotify Camp Nou renovations on time, the club has yet to propose this “Plan B” to LaLiga or the RFEF. Both organizations must approve relocating the match outside Spain.
The Last Clásico: A Heavy Defeat for Real Madrid
This match will serve as a sort of revenge for Real Madrid, who suffered their second heavy defeat of the season at the hands of their fierce rivals.
The last encounter between the two teams took place during the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia, where Barcelona secured a dominant 5-2 victory. The Blaugrana were propelled by a brace from Raphinha and goals from Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, and Alejandro Balde.
Real Madrid managed to get on the scoreboard through Kylian Mbappé and Rodrygo, but their efforts weren’t enough to avoid the loss.
