CSD Grants Injunction to Barcelona for Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor to Play
The Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD) announced on Wednesday that it has approved the urgent provisional measure requested by FC Barcelona regarding players Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor. This measure temporarily suspends the decision made by the RFEF-LaLiga Coordination Agreement Monitoring Commission on January 4, which had canceled the players' licenses.
The CSD has ruled that the licenses of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor will remain valid until the appeal is resolved, allowing them to play for Barcelona. This decision follows the club’s appeal, which consisted of 52 pages and over 60 documents.
CSD’s Rationale
The CSD explained that Barcelona, Dani Olmo, and Pau Víctor questioned whether the Coordination Agreement Monitoring Commission had the authority to grant or deny the players’ licenses, as their role is to interpret and ensure compliance with the RFEF-LaLiga Coordination Agreement, not to issue licenses. This raised concerns about the legality of the commission’s decision, leading to the CSD’s intervention.
The CSD emphasized that the players are entitled to pursue their professional careers with guarantees and certainty under the Sports Law, and that not adopting this precautionary measure could lead to severe economic and sporting harm for both the club and the players. Additionally, it noted the potential negative impact on the interests of the Spanish national team and domestic competitions, including LaLiga.
The Case of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor
The conflict began in the summer when Barcelona attempted to register Dani Olmo, one of the club’s key signings, using Christensen's injury as a reason. However, Barcelona failed to submit the necessary financial guarantees on time to comply with LaLiga’s 1:1 rule, which left both players without registration, even though they were registered on the last day of the year. However, they did not meet the requirements to maintain their registration.
In January, both Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor were removed from LaLiga, and the RFEF also denied their registration. Despite efforts from president Joan Laporta and the club to secure their registration through legal channels and the sale of VIP seats at Camp Nou, the authorities stood firm until the CSD intervened.
Now, with the injunction in their favor, Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor will be able to play, including in a potential Supercopa de España final if Barcelona advances after facing Athletic Club.
