Find Out if Ángel Correa’s Suspension Will Be Reduced in LaLiga
The Atlético de Madrid forward will serve a five-match ban after the Spanish Football Federation rejected the club’s appeal.
Appeals Committee upholds original decision
The Appeals Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Friday that it would dismiss the appeal filed by Atlético de Madrid to reduce or overturn the five-match suspension handed to Ángel Correa. The Argentine striker was sent off during the March 9 match against Getafe on Matchday 27 of LaLiga.
According to referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernández, Correa committed a reckless tackle with excessive force and, upon being shown the red card, insulted the referee using highly offensive language. The Disciplinary Committee initially handed him a one-match ban for the foul (under Article 130.1) and an additional four-match suspension for verbal misconduct (under Article 99), along with monetary fines based on Article 52 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code.
Atlético’s video evidence fails to convince
Atlético de Madrid submitted video footage in its appeal, aiming to challenge the accuracy of the referee’s report. However, the Appeals Committee found the material insufficient to demonstrate a “clear and evident” error.
“The video evidence does not provide undeniable proof that contradicts the official report,” stated the committee. “The only scenario in which an appeal could succeed is if the footage clearly invalidated what the referee described, and that was not the case.”
The ruling added that the referee’s account accurately captured the key elements of the incident, and that the committee found no basis to overrule the original decision.
Correa will miss key matches for Atlético
With the appeal rejected, Ángel Correa will be unavailable for five matches—a serious blow for Diego Simeone as Atlético de Madrid enters a decisive stretch of the season. The club remains in the fight for a strong finish in LaLiga and is also competing in the Copa del Rey.
Although Atlético could take the case to Spain’s Administrative Court for Sport, that route rarely changes disciplinary outcomes once federation rulings are confirmed.
For now, Simeone must adjust his lineup and tactical plans as the rojiblancos continue their push in both domestic competitions—without one of their most experienced attackers.
