Flick Rotates Less than Xavi: The Ten Most Used Players Accumulate More than 3,600 Extra Minutes
The arrival of Hansi Flick at the helm of Barcelona has brought about a noticeable change in how the squad is managed. While Xavi Hernández was known for his frequent rotations among players, the German coach has opted for more stability in his line-ups, leading to a significant increase in the minutes played by key players. According to data provided by BeSoccer Pro for EFE, the ten most used players under Flick have accumulated a total of 29,824 minutes in the first 43 official matches of the season, 3,659 more minutes than the ten most-used players under Xavi at the same point last season.
Individual growth in minutes: from Raphinha to Pedri
Among the standout players under Flick, Raphinha shines as one of the team's most important figures. Compared to last season, where his playing time was limited (1,472 minutes), this year he has accumulated 3,442 minutes, becoming the most-used attacker of the season. This increase is a clear reflection of his improvement and adaptation to Flick's playing style.
Another player who has made a significant leap in minutes is Pedri. The Canary Island midfielder has played 3,293 minutes, a much higher figure compared to the 1,545 minutes from last season when injuries hindered his performance. This rise in playing time highlights his importance in Flick's system, where he has become the central pillar of the midfield.
Goalkeeping: a battle for the starting role
One of the most notable changes this season has been the competition for the starting goalkeeper spot. While Marc-André ter Stegen was undisputed as the starter last season (2,340 minutes), his playing time has been reduced due to a serious injury, allowing Iñaki Peña (1,873 minutes) to take a more prominent role. However, Flick has also opted for the experienced Wojciech Szczesny, who has taken the starting role, accumulating 1,406 minutes so far.
In defense, Jules Koundé remains a key figure at right-back, while in the center of the defense, Pau Cubarsí and Iñigo Martínez have formed a solid partnership. Between them, they have accumulated 6,093 minutes, much more than the combined 4,955 minutes of Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen last season.
Midfield remains a contested area
Although Dani Olmo has been the first choice in the attacking midfield for Flick (1,377 minutes), competition in this area of the field is fierce. Fermín López (1,116 minutes) and Gavi (914 minutes) have also been regular options, but injuries have played a key role in the alternation of these positions.

Hansi Flick's rotation style, with fewer changes and more continuity in the line-ups, has had a direct impact on the minutes played by the most used players. This approach, though in contrast to Xavi's, seems to be paying off by solidifying Barcelona as a cohesive team with players in excellent form to face the challenges of the season.
