Florentino Pérez: Real Madrid President Until 2029
Florentino Pérez has been officially proclaimed president of Real Madrid until 2029 after the deadline for presenting candidacies closed with no opposition. This marks his seventh term and the fifth consecutive without competition since he resumed control of the club in 2009, solidifying his position as one of the most influential figures in football history.
Reappointment Without Elections
On January 7, Pérez requested that the club's Electoral Board initiate the election process for the presidency and Board of Directors. Ten days later, his candidacy—the only one submitted—was approved. According to Real Madrid’s bylaws, the lack of opposing candidates eliminates the need for a pre-approval process, automatically confirming his reappointment.
The club officially announced his continued presidency in a statement on Sunday, citing Article 40, Section E, Point 2 of the club's statutes, which allows automatic re-election in the absence of alternative candidacies.
A Legacy of Unmatched Success
Since first assuming the presidency in 2000, Pérez has overseen a period of unprecedented achievement at Real Madrid. Under his leadership, the club has secured 65 titles across football and basketball, including seven UEFA Champions League trophies and three EuroLeague championships. This makes him the most successful president in the club's history, surpassing the legendary Santiago Bernabéu.
Pérez initially took office after defeating then-president Ramón Mendoza in 2000, was re-elected in 2004, and briefly stepped down in 2006. He returned in 2009, ushering in a second era of sustained sporting and financial success.
