Gerard Piqué Leaves The Door Open to Becoming FC Barcelona's President
Gerard Piqué has never hidden his desire to return to FC Barcelona in the future. While the role of a coach does not appeal to him, the club’s presidency does. In November 2022, after announcing his retirement, the former defender admitted on Twitch that he would like to take on the position one day. Now, two and a half years later, the idea still lingers in his mind, though he acknowledges that the decision is not so simple.
In a recent conversation with Iker Casillas, Piqué reaffirmed his interest in leading the Blaugrana club, but with some reservations. "If the club needs me, I will be Barcelona's president," he stated. However, he also made it clear that the position comes with more sacrifices than benefits. "Being Barça's president involves many sacrifices, especially for someone like me, who doesn’t need it. For others, the position opens many doors, but for me, it would be a much bigger sacrifice," explained the former footballer, who has built a successful career as an entrepreneur with his company Kosmos, focused on sports and entertainment.
"Barça has given me everything"
Although taking on the presidency could limit his business freedom, Piqué feels a sense of responsibility toward the club. "Barça has given me everything, and I am who I am because of this club. We become what we are thanks to the teams we belong to and that give us everything," he said. While he is uncertain about when or if he will run for president, he keeps the door open: "It depends on the club’s circumstances and my personal situation."
More than just a former player, Piqué has a deep-rooted connection with the Catalan club. "I had a membership card before I had an ID card. My grandfather made me a member before I was even born," he recalled. His maternal grandfather, Amador Bernabeu, worked in the club’s board for 23 years, further strengthening his bond with the institution.
His commitment to the club remains strong
Despite focusing on his personal projects, the former defender assures that he will always be available to help Barcelona, regardless of the role. "I’ve always tried to be there (…) and if one day I see that the club needs me, I will make myself available for whatever is needed, not necessarily as president," he stated.
Thus, while his path to the presidency is not yet defined, Gerard Piqué remains committed to his promise of returning to the club that shaped him. Only time will tell if he will eventually lead FC Barcelona from the boardroom.
