Javier Tebas Responds to Real Madrid Over Controversial Refereeing
LaLiga president Javier Tebas responded on Monday via his social media to the formal complaint filed by Real Madrid against the RFEF and the CSD, stating, "We voted to change the system, and they (the white club) opposed it and didn’t offer solutions."
Reaction to Real Madrid’s Letter
"I wasn’t surprised at all by the Real Madrid letter, as it doesn’t say anything different from what their television channel has been repeating for some time," said Tebas regarding the document in which Real Madrid condemned the "scandalous performance of the refereeing and VAR" in the LaLiga match against Espanyol last Saturday.
The Change Proposed by Tebas
"Many of us advocated for a radical change in the refereeing system, moving closer to the English or German model, with a completely different organization and much more transparency in all structural decisions of Spanish refereeing," explained Tebas. However, he emphasized that during a LaLiga meeting on April 19, 2023, this change was debated and even voted on, but Real Madrid opposed it, remaining lukewarm and offering no solutions.
Tebas also wondered if Real Madrid’s stance had anything to do with the context at the time when Luis Rubiales was president of the RFEF and Florentino Pérez was part of its Board of Directors. He also reminded that the Negreira case was already in the courts at that time and Real Madrid took weeks to join the case.
Finally, Tebas questioned Real Madrid’s stance on "corrupt systems," clarifying that he was not referring to Real Madrid as an institution, but to other aspects related to Spanish football.
