LaLiga Tighter Than Ever… in the Last 10 Years!
Not since the 2013/14 season have Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid been separated by so few points at this stage of the campaign.
Barcelona made a statement with a dominant win over Sevilla at the Sánchez Pizjuán, capitalizing on the draw between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu to set up a thrilling title race.
After 23 matchdays, the standings couldn't be closer:
- Real Madrid – 50 points
- Atlético Madrid – 49 points
- Barcelona – 48 points
Even Athletic Club (44 points) isn't too far behind, keeping their title dreams alive.
A Three-Way Fight for LaLiga
The last time these three clubs were this neck-and-neck after 23 rounds was in 2013/14, when they were all tied at 57 points with identical records:
- 18 wins
- 3 draws
- 2 losses
Barcelona led the table on goal difference (+46), with 63 goals scored and 17 conceded. Real Madrid (+41) and Atlético Madrid (+40) weren’t far behind. Interestingly, Athletic Club was also fourth that season, but they were much further back, sitting 13 points behind the leaders.
Good Memories for Atlético Madrid
That season ended in dramatic fashion, with Real Madrid shifting focus to the Champions League, which they ultimately won in Lisbon against Atlético Madrid. In LaLiga, they won just 9 of their last 15 games, slipping to third place. Barcelona also managed only 9 wins down the stretch, leaving Atlético Madrid in pole position with one extra victory (10). The title was decided on the final matchday in a head-to-head battle at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona struck first through Alexis Sánchez, but Diego Godín equalized in the second half. A disallowed Messi goal sealed Barça’s fate, and Atlético Madrid held on to lift their first LaLiga title in 19 years. Will we see a repeat of history, or will one of the giants pull ahead this time?
