A Race Against Time to Recover
The initial medical report issued by Barça on December 16 estimated a recovery period of three to four weeks. However, Lamine managed to accelerate his recovery just in time to travel with the team for the Spanish Super Cup. During his vacation in Dubai, he worked with a club physiotherapist and stayed in constant contact with Dr. Pruna, keeping him updated on his progress.
Just one day before the match against Athletic Club, the young talent was seen training with his teammates. The club even shared a video of a stunning goal scored by Lamine during the session.
🎯⚽ Lamine Yamal’s brilliant goal in training
Without their 17-year-old winger, Barcelona has seen a significant dip in performance, relying on his leadership to help turn things around after a tough November and December. The team secured just five points from the last 21 in LaLiga, suffering three consecutive home losses against Las Palmas, Leganés, and Atlético Madrid.
The team also awaits medical clearance for forward Ferran Torres and defenders Héctor Fort and Andreas Christensen. However, it is unlikely that coach Flick will take risks by starting them in the upcoming match.
The Supercopa presents German coach Flick with the first opportunity to secure a title for Barcelona since they won La Liga under Xavi Hernández in 2023.
On the other side, Athletic Club is aiming for their fourth Supercopa win, riding high on the optimism generated by a successful 2024. In addition to their Copa del Rey title, they are currently fourth in LaLiga, just two points behind Barcelona, and co-leaders in the Europa League, where they remain undefeated.
The "Lions" are on a 15-match unbeaten streak, with their last loss coming on October 6 against Girona at Montilivi, where they missed three penalty kicks.
