More Drama Unfolds: LaLiga to Appeal Dani Olmo’s Registration with Barcelona
The ongoing controversy surrounding the registration of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor with FC Barcelona has taken a new turn. On Monday, LaLiga announced that it will appeal the decision made by the Spanish Sports Council (CSD), which allowed both players to remain officially registered despite alleged violations of the current regulations.
LaLiga Claims Legal Irregularities
In an official statement, LaLiga argued that both players’ registrations had automatically expired on December 31, 2024, in accordance with the federation’s registration rules and the agreements reached during the RFEF-LaLiga Joint Monitoring Commission held on January 4, 2025.
“The denial of prior validation for renewal or new registration is the direct result of applying existing registration rules,” the statement read.
LaLiga further asserted that no formal cancellation act was required, as the expiration of their contracts itself invalidated the licenses. The league also questioned the CSD's authority, stating that the Council “has no power to grant or cancel licenses,” referencing Articles 116.3.a and 117 of Spain’s Sports Law.
CSD Rules in Favor of Barcelona
The CSD sided with Barcelona, declaring that the joint RFEF-LaLiga commission lacked the authority to block the players’ registrations. It described the agreement used to prevent the license processing as "null and void" and confirmed that Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor remain properly registered.
However, the CSD did not address the financial control aspect of the case, which falls under LaLiga's jurisdiction. This could become the next major point of contention, possibly leading the dispute to higher legal authorities or even a courtroom battle.
