Real Madrid Outraged by The Schedule: Demands Respect for The 72-Hour Rest Rule
Real Madrid has expressed its discontent with the scheduling of their LaLiga match against Villarreal. The club, coming off an intense Champions League clash against Atlético de Madrid, believes that the recommended 72-hour recovery period set by FIFA has not been respected.
A Firm Complaint About the Calendar
Club sources state that this situation will not happen again and that if another match is scheduled with less than the recommended recovery time, they will seek FIFA's protection for their players. Additionally, they described the scheduling of the game against Villarreal as an "attack on the players' health."
The stance of Real Madrid was revealed by their official channel shortly before announcing the lineup for the match at La Cerámica. The club highlights that their game against Atlético de Madrid extended into a penalty shootout, further reducing the recovery period below the minimum recommended before the next fixture.
Ancelotti Speaks Out
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti had already voiced his frustration in the pre-match press conference before facing Villarreal. "I don't understand it, but we can't do anything. We have to be there and play the game anyway," said the Italian.
He also criticized the calendar for prioritizing commercial interests over player welfare. "TV rights and money take precedence, but no one thinks about the risk of injuries for the players. That’s the last thing on their minds," he stated.
Additionally, Real Madrid compared their situation to that of their direct rivals, Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona, who will face each other at the Metropolitano, benefiting from an extra day of rest. This difference has increased frustration within the club, as they feel the scheduling has put them at a disadvantage.
Despite the complaints, Real Madrid must overcome fatigue and focus on securing three crucial points in their LaLiga title race.
