Simeone's Dark Days After Atlético's Champions League and League Setbacks
The Atlético de Madrid coach admits the emotional toll of the club’s recent eliminations but says he’s back and energized after a brief trip home to Argentina.
To recover mentally, Simeone took a short trip back to Argentina during the international break. “I went back to where I was born and raised, to draw strength from my people,” he said. “Now I’m back, with a lot of energy and hunger.”
He also noted that the break was helpful for many of his players who joined their national teams. “It was positive for almost everyone — Giménez, Reinildo, Julián, Sørloth, Giuliano, Rodrigo De Paul, Correa, Robin — they all returned in high spirits. Winning always lifts your mood,” he explained.
Looking Ahead to Espanyol
With the international break behind them, Atlético de Madrid returns to action this Saturday against Espanyol. Though the team is now out of the Champions League and trailing in LaLiga, every remaining match is crucial for Simeone and his squad.
Having processed the emotional setbacks, the Argentine coach is now fully focused on the final stretch of the season. “We’re back to compete, with full energy,” he concluded.
