Atlético de Madrid President Puts Pressure on ‘Cholo’ Simeone: “The Goal Is No Longer to Finish in the Top Three, but to Win”
Enrique Cerezo raised expectations for the new season, backing Diego Simeone and making it clear that Atlético de Madrid is aiming for titles.
“We’re Going Out to Win Everything”
With a bold statement, Enrique Cerezo, president of Atlético de Madrid, made it clear that the club's ambition for the upcoming season goes beyond just competing—it’s about winning. During the team’s traditional preseason dinner in Segovia, the president declared: “The goal is no longer what it used to be—to finish in the top three—but to win.”
The dinner gathered players, coaching staff, and the board of directors in a show of unity and shared ambition. The evening featured the customary roast suckling pig, and Cerezo expressed full confidence in Diego Simeone: “Cholo is very happy with the squad that has been assembled.”
Transfers, Departures, and an Open Window
Atlético de Madrid has strengthened its roster with six signings, including Slovakian defender David Hancko, officially announced on Wednesday. Cerezo confirmed that the team brought in the reinforcements they believed were necessary, though he did not rule out further signings: “Right now we have everything in place, but if an opportunity comes up, we’ll take it.”
The president also addressed the departure of Saúl Ñíguez, a club legend: “He’s a Atlético legend and a great player. The circumstances required it, and we’re all sad to see him go.”
With a refreshed squad and high aspirations, Atlético de Madrid is preparing to fight for LaLiga, the Champions League, and the Copa del Rey. The message from the top is loud and clear: Atlético no longer wants to just compete—it wants to win.
