Atlético Madrid Announce New Signing To Challenge Real Madrid And Barcelona For LaLiga Title
The rojiblancos aim to step up their title bid by signing Álex Baena from Villarreal in a high-profile summer move.
Baena Signs Until 2030 With Atlético
Atlético Madrid have officially confirmed the signing of Álex Baena on a five-year deal running through June 2030. The Spanish international midfielder joins from Villarreal, after completing his medical and sealing the move at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, where he was welcomed by Miguel Ángel Gil, the club’s CEO.
The 23-year-old, who turns 24 on July 20, arrives for a reported €42 million. Known for his creativity and technical ability, Baena brings a dynamic option to Diego Simeone’s squad. The club praised his dribbling, powerful shot, and ability to deliver key passes.
From Villarreal Talent To National Team Star
A product of Villarreal’s youth system, Baena made his first-team debut in 2019. After a season-long loan at Girona, he returned to become a key figure in the yellow submarine's midfield. He had a breakout season in 2022–23 with 12 goals, and continued to impress with 17 assists in 2023–24.
His growth earned him a place with the Spanish national team, where he debuted under Luis de la Fuente in 2023 and was part of the squad that lifted the Euro 2024 trophy in Germany. He also played a vital role in Spain’s Olympic gold medal at Paris 2024, scoring and assisting in the final against France.
Atlético’s Summer Reinforcements Continue
Baena is Atlético’s second major signing of the summer, following the arrival of Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta. The club is also close to finalizing a deal for Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis, with all three players expected to contribute immediately to the 2025–26 project.
Additional reinforcements are still on the agenda. The club plans to bring in a central defender, a right winger, a fullback, and a striker to replace the likely departure of Ángel Correa. Several players have already exited, including Axel Witsel, César Azpilicueta, and Reinildo Mandava, whose contracts ended in June.
With Clément Lenglet and Juan Musso already re-signed through 2028, the team’s management is building a squad ready to compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona for the LaLiga crown next season.
