Caroline Weir the hero as Real Madrid make Clasico history
Real Madrid had Caroline Weir to thank as they secured bragging rights over Clasico rivals Barcelona in a match of high drama on Sunday.
Caroline Weir scored twice late on as Real Madrid claimed a dramatic 3-1 victory over Barcelona Femeni at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium on Sunday.
The Scotland international stole the spotlight in the closing stages as Madrid ended an 18-game losing streak against their arch rivals.
Weir put Madrid in front in the 87th minute and got her second six minutes into stoppage time to complete the win.
Alba Redondo had earlier given Madrid the lead late in the first half, only for Caroline Graham Hansen to equalise in the 67th minute.
But Weir's late intervention ensured Madrid's first-ever win over Barca in all competitions, while they became the first women's team to win an away league match against Barca by more than two goals since Rayo Vallecano in September 2012.
It was also the first time Barca had conceded three goals at home since the formation of Liga F in 2022, while Madrid's six shots on target were the most they had allowed on their goal on their own turf in that period.
The defeat ended Barcelona’s 10-match winning streak across all competitions, while Madrid produced a spirited response following their embarrassing 5-0 loss to the Catalans in January’s Spanish Women’s Super Cup final.
Despite the loss, Barcelona remain top of the Liga F table, holding a four-point lead over second-placed Madrid with only seven games remaining.
Both teams now shift their focus to midweek Champions League action.
Reigning champions Barcelona hold a 4-1 advantage as they host Wolfsburg on Thursday for the second leg of their quarter-final tie, while Madrid take a 2-0 lead to the Emirates Stadium for their clash against Arsenal on Wednesday.
