Cuti Romero Defends Julian Alvarez Amid Growing Controversy at Atletico Madrid
Atletico's new defender was asked about his Argentina teammate and made his feelings clear amid uncertainty over the striker's future.
Cristian Romero was officially unveiled as a new Atletico Madrid player, and during his first press conference as a member of the club, one of the names that inevitably came up was Julian Alvarez.
The Argentine striker finds himself in a complicated situation after expressing his desire to leave the club during a transfer window in which Barcelona have shown interest in signing him. The uncertainty has put one of Diego Simeone's most important players firmly in the spotlight.
Cuti, who knows Alvarez well from their time together with the Argentina national team, attempted to ease concerns and insisted his compatriot remains fully focused despite all the speculation surrounding his future.
“He Is Fully Focused”
Romero was clear when asked about Alvarez's attitude and state of mind amid the uncertainty.
“I see him doing very well. I see him as always, a guy who wants to keep scoring goals and wants to entertain the fans,” Atletico's new defender said.
Cuti also highlighted the commitment he has seen from his teammate: “I see him fully focused, and that makes me very happy.”
His comments come at a time when virtually everything surrounding Alvarez is being closely scrutinized because of the doubts over his future in Madrid.
Julian Alvarez's Future Remains Uncertain
Alvarez did not feature in Atletico Madrid's LaLiga opener against Malaga, with Simeone leaving him out because of his physical condition, but his absence did little to stop the speculation.
The Argentine has been one of the major names of the transfer window, particularly because of Barcelona's interest. Atletico, however, have remained firm in their stance and have shown no intention of making it easy for one of their biggest stars to leave.
While speculation continues, Romero says he sees an Alvarez who remains focused and eager to keep scoring goals — hardly the picture of a player who has completely checked out of the Atletico project.
Cuti Romero Wants to Make His Mark at Atletico
Beyond the questions about Alvarez, Romero also discussed his own expectations after completing his move to Atletico Madrid.
“I've played against Atletico Madrid a few times and you can feel the support from the fans. That's why I'm looking forward to competing alongside my teammates, and I hope I can live up to expectations,” he said.
The defender also thanked the club for the effort made to sign him and made it clear that one of his biggest ambitions is to build his own legacy in Madrid.
“I want to leave my mark on the history of this club, and the only way to do that is by winning,” Romero said.
Romero Arrives With His Sights Set on Trophies
The Argentine admitted that playing in Spain represented one of the major challenges he still wanted to experience during his career.
“It was a challenge I still had left in my career. I wanted to play in the three biggest leagues in Europe, and I'm close to achieving that. It didn't happen last season for different reasons, but I'm very excited,” he explained.
Simply joining Atletico, however, is not enough for the World Cup winner. Romero made it clear that he arrives with the ambition to compete for trophies immediately.
“When you compete, you always want to win. There's not a single player at Atletico who thinks differently. We have to take things step by step, but always with a winning mentality,” he said.
Cuti therefore begins his Atletico career with major ambitions and, even before making his debut, has already publicly backed Alvarez during one of the most uncertain periods of the striker's time in Madrid.
