Fermín López Thrills Barcelona Fans: “I’m Not at My Prime Yet”
Fermín López extends his contract with FC Barcelona until 2031 and sends a message: “I’m not in my prime yet.” The 22-year-old midfielder said this Friday that he still has room to grow as a professional footballer after signing a two-year contract extension with Barcelona, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2031.
The Spain international has become an important player for Hansi Flick, who — according to Fermín — has given him confidence during a season in which he already has 10 goals and 11 assists for FC Barcelona.
“I’m still not in my prime; I’m 22 years old and I still have room for improvement,” Fermín said during the renewal ceremony.
From Linares to Barça: Fermín López’s path to the first team
The player from Huelva also highlighted the role of Xavi Hernández, the coach who trusted him after his loan spell at Linares (Primera RFEF) — a period he described as “tough,” but crucial for his development.
In the summer of 2023, Fermín caught the coaching staff’s attention during Barcelona’s preseason tour in the United States, where he even scored in a friendly against Real Madrid, a key moment in his rise to the first team.

“I’ve gone through a difficult journey and learned many things along the way. Nothing has ever been easy for me, and that helped me mature and be ready when my moment came,” the attacking midfielder reflected.
That maturity is now visible on the field, where Fermín says he feels calmer on the ball, while maintaining the same off-field routines he has followed for years, focused on nutrition, sleep, and individual training.
Looking ahead, the midfielder is ambitious about the future. He dreams of winning the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona, a trophy the club has been chasing for years. “We have the ability to do it,” he said.
The Chelsea offer from last summer is now in the past, and Fermín thanked FC Barcelona for “trusting and believing” in him. The player admitted he never doubted that his place was at the Catalan club.
This season, he has competed for a starting spot with Dani Olmo, whom he described as “a friend and a great teammate,” highlighting the healthy competition in Barcelona’s squad.
Fermín, who says he has been a Barça fan since childhood, does not hide his dream of one day becoming FC Barcelona captain and making history by winning titles with the club.
