Flick says Barca must remain focused in LaLiga despite Clasico victory
Barcelona are just one win away from the LaLiga title after they continued their Clasico dominance with a 4-3 victory over Real Madrid.
Hansi Flick urged his Barcelona players to remain focused as they moved closer to clinching the LaLiga title with a thrilling 4-3 win over Real Madrid on Sunday.
Flick watched on as Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the first 14 minutes to give Madrid breathing space, but the Blaugrana responded emphatically.
Eric Garcia pulled one back for Barca before a stunning finish from Lamine Yamal restored parity at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.
But the first-half scoring was not done there. Raphinha netted twice in 11 minutes to hand Barca a two-goal cushion heading into the break.
Indeed, with six goals scored by the interval, this was the Clasico with the joint-most first-half goals, alongside matches in February 1935 and January 1943.
Mbappe grabbed his hat-trick with 20 minutes of the encounter remaining, but Barca navigated an end-to-end finish to continue their dominance in this fabled fixture.
Flick's team are now seven points clear of Madrid and have beaten them four times across all competitions this season,
They could secure the title as early as Wednesday if their Clasico rivals fail to beat Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabeu.
However, regardless of Madrid's midweek result, a Barca victory in their city derby against Espanyol on Thursday would clinch a 28th top-flight title.
"I don't feel like we are champions yet, and I believe my players think the same way," Flick told a press conference.
"It would be nice to win the LaLiga and Copa del Rey double and, yes, one win is enough for us to do it. But this is football.
"Sure, we are in a good position, but you never know what will happen. We have three matches ahead of us and all our rivals want to beat us, so we must remain focused."
Flick also praised his players for their resilience in fighting back after Mbappe's early strikes, which saw him become the highest-scoring player for Madrid across all competitions in a debut season for the club (he ended the game on 39 goals for the campaign).
"It was not easy to recover after going down 2-0, but the mentality of the team is just remarkable, how they are always looking to attack relentlessly," Flick said.
"It's nice to see them out there on the pitch."
The result followed Barca's heartbreaking extra-time loss to Inter that saw them exit the Champions League at the semi-final stage of the competition.
And Flick's team were worthy of their win, ending the contest with an expected goals (xG) total of 4.21 to Madrid's 2.66.
The Barca boss lauded the win as a statement of his players' grit and resiliency, saying: "It's fantastic. And it's all to do with training, how they like to compete with each other.
"You can see it in the training sessions. In the last four months, it has not been easy due to the relentless schedule. I'm proud of the mentality and the attitude of my team."
Flick also took the time to praise Yamal for his fine display, with the teenager registering several team-high totals in the match metrics.
Indeed, Yamal had more successful dribbles (four), more shots on target (five) and won possession back more times (seven) than any of his team-mates.
Yamal, alongside Pedri, Raphinha and Ferran Torres, also created three chances, a joint-game-high total alongside Madrid's Vinicius Junior.
"He is doing great. He has confidence in himself. He's also very clever," Flick said of Yamal. "For me, what's important is that after the games he looks forward.
"His goal was crucial and, at 17 years old, he has so many qualities. It's just great to have him around."
