Gavi Losing Playing Time at Barcelona Raises Questions for Hansi Flick

  • The Barcelona academy graduate is enduring a difficult start to the season, and his absence from El Clásico against Real Madrid raises further questions about his role in Hansi Flick’s plans.

Gavi has played just 191 minutes in seven official matches for FC Barcelona, losing prominence during the 2026-27 season

Gavi is going through a difficult start to the season with FC Barcelona. The Spanish midfielder has lost his place in Hansi Flick’s plans, a situation that became evident during El Clásico against Real Madrid, when he remained on the bench without playing a single minute.

THE NUMBERS REFLECT HIS LIMITED PLAYING TIME

The statistics highlight the situation facing the 22-year-old midfielder. Of Barcelona’s 13 official matches played through October 28, Gavi has logged just 191 minutes across seven appearances in LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League, according to Spanish media reports.

The midfielder started the campaign in the lineup against Elche on the opening matchday of LaLiga. However, a right knee contusion forced him to miss the following matches against Athletic Club and Rayo Vallecano.

Although he gradually returned to action, his opportunities have remained limited. His most notable appearance came against Getafe, when he started and played 61 minutes. He also featured against Feyenoord, Racing de Santander, Galatasaray and Paris Saint-Germain.

FLICK HAS MORE OPTIONS IN MIDFIELD

Internal competition is another obstacle for Gavi. Pedri and Rodri Hernández are among the midfield options, while Frenkie de Jong, after overcoming his physical problems, has given the German manager another alternative. Marc Bernal is also competing for a place in the rotation.

Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid made the situation more challenging for the Andalusian midfielder, who did not feature despite the importance of the match and his reputation for bringing intensity to high-pressure games.

Nevertheless, Gavi remains committed to Barcelona and has made no secret of his desire to regain his place. There is still time for him to turn his season around, but the academy graduate will need to make the most of every opportunity to convince Flick and reclaim an important role in the Catalan club’s project.

GAVI LOSES PROMINENCE AT BARCELONA

  • LIMITED PLAYING TIME: Gavi has recorded 191 minutes across seven official appearances.
  • INCREASED COMPETITION: Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and other midfield options are making it harder for him to secure a regular place.
  • A CHALLENGE FOR FLICK: The Barcelona academy graduate is looking to regain prominence and win back the German manager’s trust.
