Franco Mastantuono's first season at Real Madrid has not unfolded the way many expected when the Spanish giants made a major investment to bring one of South America's brightest young talents to the Santiago Bernabéu.

Adapting to European football has proven more challenging than anticipated. Although the Argentine winger enjoyed opportunities during the early months of the campaign, his role gradually diminished as the season progressed until he became a secondary option within the squad.

Now, both Real Madrid and the player reportedly believe that a loan spell could be the ideal solution, allowing the 18-year-old to play consistently and continue developing while remaining part of the club's long-term plans.

According to The Athletic, River Plate have emerged as one of the leading candidates to sign Mastantuono on loan.

The Argentine club, where the winger developed before making his high-profile move to Spain, could provide the perfect environment for him to regain confidence and enjoy regular first-team football. A return to Buenos Aires would allow him to continue growing in familiar surroundings while preparing for another opportunity at Real Madrid.

Benfica are also believed to be monitoring the situation closely. The Portuguese giants have built a reputation for developing young players, making them another appealing destination should Real Madrid decide to send the teenager elsewhere.

Fierce Competition Has Left Little Room at Real Madrid

More than a lack of talent, Mastantuono's biggest challenge has been the level of competition within Real Madrid's attacking unit.

José Mourinho already has several established options on the wings, while the expected arrival of Yan Diomandé would add even more depth to the squad. On top of that, Rodrygo is expected to return from injury later this season, making opportunities even harder to come by.

With so many attacking options available, a temporary move is increasingly viewed as the best solution for everyone involved. Mastantuono would gain valuable playing time, while Real Madrid could continue monitoring the development of one of their most promising young assets.

Squad Reshaping Remains a Priority for Los Blancos

As Real Madrid continue working on new arrivals, the club is also focused on trimming Mourinho's squad.
