Javier Tebas Confirms Key News to Barcelona That Clears Path for Nico Williams Transfer
FC Barcelona has received a major boost ahead of the summer transfer window, as LaLiga president Javier Tebas has reportedly confirmed to Joan Laporta that the club will be allowed to operate under the 1:1 rule, a shift that could prove crucial in the pursuit of Nico Williams.
What Did Tebas Communicate to Laporta?
According to Spanish media and internal club sources, Tebas personally informed Laporta that Barcelona will no longer be subject to the restrictive 1:4 or 1:3 financial ratios and can now spend in direct proportion to its income.
This confirmation provides Barça with greater freedom to register new players without the need to offload four times their value in salary or assets—a restriction that had severely limited their activity in previous windows.
What Does This Mean for Nico Williams?
The decision paves the way for Barcelona’s pursuit of Nico Williams, the Athletic Club winger, who has a €58 million release clause.
Reports suggest Williams had requested written guarantees that he would be properly registered before agreeing to the move. Now, with the 1:1 rule in effect, Barcelona is expected to have the financial flexibility needed to make the deal happen without extraordinary salary cuts or player sales.
How Did Barcelona Achieve This Financial Shift?
The turning point came with the validation of €100 million in revenue from a 30-year VIP seat license deal at the new Spotify Camp Nou. Initially rejected by LaLiga due to the stadium not being completed, the club successfully pushed construction firm Limak to install the seats before June 30.
This move convinced auditor Crowe to approve the income, helping Barcelona meet the financial criteria needed to shift to the 1:1 spending rule.
With this approval, Barça’s transfer strategy gains new life—just in time to finalize one of their top targets of the summer.
