Why Did Nico Williams Turn His Back on Barcelona?
Nico Williams has chosen stability and loyalty over the glamour of a high-profile move. The Athletic Club forward has extended his contract with the Basque side until 2035, marking the second consecutive summer that he has rejected advances from FC Barcelona, who had identified the Spanish international as a top target to bolster their left wing.
The renewal, officially confirmed this Friday, not only extends his stay by eight more years but also significantly increases his release clause, which now reportedly stands at around €90 million. This new deal effectively shields him from potential suitors—at least for now.
"I'm where I want to be, with my people. This is my home," declared Williams in an emotional video released by Athletic Club, which also features a restored mural of him in Barakaldo—previously vandalized—now bearing the message “WIN 2035,” a nod to the Williams brothers and their commitment to the club.
Why Did He Say No to Barça?
Despite Barcelona renewing their interest this summer—following a meeting between Deco and Nico’s agent Félix Tainta—the player wasn’t convinced. According to several reports, the Catalan club failed to provide written assurances regarding his registration due to ongoing financial fair play restrictions, which raised concerns within his camp.
Athletic Club’s firm stance on keeping their rising star, coupled with Barça’s lack of financial guarantees, tipped the scales. Despite public signals from Joan Laporta and social media encouragement from Lamine Yamal, Nico opted for a safer and more familiar environment.

His renewal also serves as a powerful statement of the Athletic Club’s philosophy, emphasizing loyalty as a cornerstone of its identity. The club highlighted that Nico joins other key figures like Unai Simón, Oihan Sancet, and his older brother Iñaki Williams in committing to a long-term project built on ambition and unity.
Meanwhile, Barcelona must now look elsewhere. Names like Luis Díaz and Marcus Rashford have resurfaced on their shortlist to fill the void on the left wing.
In a transfer market increasingly ruled by money, Nico Williams has chosen to stay where his heart beats strongest: San Mamés.
