Why José Mourinho would never sign Lamine Yamal for Real Madrid
'The Special One' explained the real reason he would rule out the FC Barcelona star and prefers to trust Yan Diomande.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has surprised the football world by explaining the reason why he would have absolutely no interest in signing Lamine Yamal, even if the FC Barcelona superstar were on the transfer market. Despite the youngster being a world champion and the most valuable player at the moment, 'The Special One' insists his squad needs no further additions.
In a summer where the capital of Spain has been buzzing with the return of the legendary Portuguese tactician, Mourinho has wasted no time in drawing his battle lines. Yamal already boasts three LaLiga titles in his short career, but the white team's manager is inflexible: the 19-year-old attacker has no place in his setup.
When questioned by El Chiringuito on whether he would like to bring the Blaugrana sensation to the Bernabeu, Mourinho revealed his true motive for rejecting him: prioritizing the cohesion and hierarchy of his current dressing room. "No. He’s a great player, without a doubt, a young player with unbelievable potential. To be a European and world champion at his age isn't normal, but we’ve got a top-class squad here; I wouldn't make room for anyone. These are my boys now. And my players are the best."
Yan Diomande, the 140-million chosen one
A large part of this unwavering stance stems from the massive investment the club made this summer. The Merengue entity recently secured the signature of Yan Diomande, arriving from RB Leipzig, for a record-breaking fee reaching €140 million.
The Ivorian international is expected to occupy the right wing this season, while Vinicius Junior will continue his absolute dominance on the opposite flank after rejecting a lucrative offer from Arsenal.
Speaking about his new jewel, the Portuguese coach explained the tactical reasons for his choice: "Finding a winger [like Diomande] who is quick, aggressive and can play on both flanks isn't easy, it's incredibly tough. On top of that, he's young, has room to develop and has many years ahead of him at Real Madrid... I analyze the player's profile and what he can bring to my team, and on that basis, I said: 'Yes, I want him'."
Unexpected praise for Hansi Flick's Barça
While Madridismo prepares its new Galacticos, FC Barcelona is dealing with a changing of the guard under the command of Hansi Flick. Following the high-profile departures of Robert Lewandowski to the Chicago Fire and Ferran Torres to PSG, Yamal is expected to take on an even more prominent role.
Despite the fierce historical rivalry, Mourinho offered an unusual moment of recognition for the work being done in the Catalan capital. When questioned about the current state of the Catalan team, he admitted: "Yes, I do like them. They're doing a brilliant job. Flick, Deco and obviously the players... I like what I'm seeing."
The 3 keys to the rivalry defining LaLiga
- Generational duel: The upcoming campaign will pit Lamine Yamal and Yan Diomande against each other as the ultimate representatives of the new generation of global idols on the right wing.
- Mission to reclaim the throne: Real Madrid is desperate to overthrow FC Barcelona, after Flick guided the Culé club to secure two consecutive league titles.
- Maximum pressure: Diomande will have to justify his record price tag and prove Mourinho right, while Yamal will seek to maintain his historic trajectory to show the Portuguese manager the talent he decided to ignore.
