Why was Rayo Vallecano vs Athletic Club suspended? Match will not resume Sunday
An unusual incident at the Estadio de Vallecas brought Rayo Vallecano's clash with Athletic Club to an unexpected halt. The referee's decision forced both teams to change their plans and left a major question surrounding the fixture.
The LaLiga Matchday 8 fixture between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club was suspended on Saturday after just 25 minutes of play.
Referee José María Sánchez Martínez halted the match after objects were thrown from the stands onto the pitch at the Estadio de Vallecas.
Among the objects thrown by sections of the home crowd were paper airplanes and small plastic balls, prompting the referee to suspend proceedings.

When will Rayo Vallecano vs Athletic Club be played?
Following the suspension, questions emerged about whether the match could resume later in the weekend.
However, Rayo Vallecano head coach Beñat San José ruled out the possibility of playing on Sunday.
"Rayo are training tomorrow. The match will not be played tomorrow," the Basque coach said as he left the Estadio de Vallecas.
San José scheduled a Sunday training session for his players to begin preparations for their next league fixture.
A new date for completing the suspended match has not yet been announced.
Athletic Club return to Bilbao after LaLiga decision
Athletic Club also confirmed that their traveling squad would return home after receiving an update from LaLiga.
"LaLiga has informed us that the suspended match cannot be played either later today or tomorrow, so the team is now heading to the airport," the club announced.
The Bilbao side therefore left Madrid without completing their Matchday 8 fixture.
Meanwhile, Rayo Vallecano will begin preparing for their next league match against Getafe on October 19 at the Coliseum.
