Chivas Expected to Announce New Coach: Who Is Óscar García?
The Spanish coach Óscar García Junyent has been officially appointed as the new head of Club Guadalajara, commonly known as Chivas. He will take charge of the team following the interim tenure of Arturo Ortega, who stepped in after Fernando Gago departed for Boca Juniors a month ago. The news has been widely reported by various Mexican outlets.
Who is Óscar García, the New Chivas Coach?
Óscar García recently managed OH Leuven in Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League. His tenure there was a mixed one, ending with the team in 13th place out of 16, just above the relegation zone. However, he successfully kept the team in the top division during the previous season. Prior to his time in Belgium, García managed Stade de Reims in France for a year and a half before being dismissed in 2022.
Despite his recent challenges, García brings extensive experience from various European leagues, a factor that convinced Chivas’ management, led by Amaury Vergara, to entrust him with the team’s future projects.
The Key Figures Behind García’s Appointment
The decision to hire García was made by Juan Carlos Martínez Castrejo, Director of the Sports Committee, and Fran Pérez Lázaro, Director of Professional Football. Both are part of the revamped sports project that was initially overseen by Fernando Hierro before his move to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. These two directors played a pivotal role in persuading their fellow Spaniard to take the reins of the storied Mexican club.
What’s Next for García at Chivas?
Óscar García is set to arrive in Mexico next week, where he will be officially introduced and begin planning for the 2025 season. Reports indicate he will sign a two-year contract with an option for a third. His primary goal will be to turn the tide after Chivas’ disappointing Apertura 2024 campaign, in which the team was eliminated in the Play-In stage.
